News Releases: Who, What, Where, When, Why — and How
What makes a news release compelling? What elements catch a reader’s attention and provoke action?
Crafting a news release is a cornerstone in the field of public relations and communications. It is an official statement issued to media outlets offering information on a particular matter.
A well-crafted news release answers the who, what, where, when, why and how succinctly and engagingly, ensuring that the relevant information is conveyed efficiently and is easy to understand. The goal is to inform and, ideally, to spark interest or action.
Andrea Weir Estrada will share her insight on crafting a news release that editors and reporters will actually read.
An acclaimed novelist and literary journalist, Andrea has written thousands of feature articles. Her work has appeared in magazines, newspapers, and journals across the country and around the world, including The New York Times, the London Times, the Los Angeles Times, HuffPost, Elle, Self, and Glamour. Over the course of her career, she has interviewed Nobel laureates, celebrities, and even the Dalai Lama. As the director of news and media relations at UC Santa Barbara, she oversaw the campus’s news operations and guided a team of writers. Also a writing coach, Andrea mentors writers of all ages and aspirations, nurturing their skills, encouraging their curiosity, and helping them cultivate their own unique voice.
