Magazine Publishing and Writing in a 2.0 World

A distinguished panel of publishers, editors and writers will share their insights on print publication trends, business advantages and strategic challenges at a Wednesday, October 10 program on Magazine Publishing and Writing in a 2.0 World. The program, will be held on the Antioch campus, 602 Anacapa St., from 5:30 to 7:30 pm.

The panel will discuss differences between online and print versions, paid advertising, content and requirements for contributing writers, and their sources of inspiration and ideas.

The panelists are:

  • Sally Barr, a musician, publisher and editor of MUSIC! The Sounds of Santa BarbaraSeeing a way she could help support the Santa Barbara music scene at large, Barr started a community calendar in 2009 and turned it into a magazine showcasing local and national musicians who perform in Santa Barbara.
  • Nansie Chapman, owner and publisher of Santa Barbara Family Life Magazine, where she is responsible for production, writing and business management. The 15-year-old print magazine is distributed in Santa Barbara County and surrounding communities and also appears online.
  • Leslie Dinaberg, editor of Santa Barbara SEASONS magazine, Santa Barbara Visitors Magazine and The Source. She is a columnist for Noozhawk.com and ParentClick.com, and her stories have been featured in national magazines. She is the former executive editor of SAM Magazine and managing editor of Hispanic Business Magazine and SuperOnda Magazine.
  • Amy Marie Orozco, editor of Carpinteria Magazine, is responsible for ensuring the beachside town’s tales are told in the award-winning publication. She is the former editor of Coastal View News, Carpinteria’s weekly newspaper, and her work has appeared in local, regional and national publications. She is the author of Solvang – A Guide to the Danish Capital of America, published in 2011.
  • Maria Streshinsky, editor-in-chief of Pacific Standard, formerly Miller-McCune magazine. Before coming to Santa Barbara last year, she was managing editor at The Atlantic, where she directed the editorial staff and was instrumental in revitalizing the 154-year old publication and restoring it to profitability. Prior to her role at The Atlantic, Streshinsky served as program analyst with the U.S. Department of the Interior. She has also held editorial roles with Mother Jones, AAA World and VIA Magazine.
  • Leslie Westbrook, a freelance writer and member of the AWC-SB board, will serve as moderator.
