June President’s Message

“No person was ever honored for what he received. Honor has been the reward for what he gave.” ~ Calvin Coolidge

I’m so excited about our annual Women of Achievement Awards, Money Matter$: Journalism, Justice, Empowerment, event next Wednesday, June 5, 11:30 am – 1:30 pm, at the Montecito Country Club. Our two honorees, Marsha Bailey, CEO of Women’s Economic Ventures and Kathleen Sharp, investigative journalist and author of the just-released and highly-acclaimed book, Blood Medicine, are two women who have truly given to our community by creating economic opportunity and justice.

Marsha Bailey will speak about her tenacity in getting the message out to WEV clients, board members and the community about the need for economic opportunity. I look forward to hearing her story, learning about her success and her drive for persuasion.

Kathleen Sharp will tell a story worthy of the next thriller movie.  And this story is true. The film project is already underway with New Regency – read about this deal here. I’m eager to hear how she investigated the story of a whistle blower who took on the corporate interests of Johnson & Johnson.

If you haven’t signed up for this event yet, you need to do so today!  Click here!

Other highlights of the event will be:  AWC-SB Poet Laureate, Perie Longo will share a poem about the honorees. Mary Olsen, KCLU General Manager will emcee. Lois Phillips, AWC-SB founder and emerita board member will present the Lois Phillips Founders Award to Dr. Laura Jansma, UCSB Communications professor.

Hope to see you all there!

Appreciatively,

Lynn
