July President’s Message

From Past President Rebecca Christenson

Welcome to the third issue of our e-newsletter, Connections! This month you will learn more about the women of our chapter and what they are up to in the world. I also want to let you know about some exciting events that are coming, as well as events that were hosted by our chapter and attended by our members.

The Association for Women in Communications enjoyed one of its most successful events at the Women of Achievement Luncheon on June 1, honoring journalist Starshine Roshell and CEO Lynda Weinman as our 2011 Women of Achievement. More than 150 guests joined us for our annual luncheon at the Hotel Mar Monte to recognize excellence in the field of communications and hear from our esteemed recipients. Friends, colleagues, and the public at large joined AWC-SB members in honoring them and hearing their delightful presentations.

Current President Kathleen Barry hosted a “thank you reception” to outgoing board members at the end of the fiscal year. Ballots for the new board elections were sent to all AWC-SB members at the beginning of the new fiscal year. A big thank you goes out to Board President Kathleen Barry for her continued leadership and to the individuals who agreed to serve as board members for this year. They will provide new energy and great ideas for programs, events, and membership recruitment.

Please plan to join AWC-SB for our next event at the Canary Hotel on September 7. Marcia Meier will be our presenter, talking on the subject of “Letting Go of Your Fears.” Marcia is an award-winning writer, editor, writing coach, and former director of the Santa Barbara Writers Conference. She is also the author of Navigating the Rough Waters of Today’s Publishing World, and is a former AWC Woman of Achievement.

Enjoy your summer!

Rebecca Christenson,
Past President & Current Treasurer, AWC-SB

Editor’s Note: We are very saddened to report that Kathleen Barry’s husband, Roy Mankovitz, died suddenly and unexpectedly days before we went to publication. Becky Christenson wrote the President’s Message update on behalf of Kathleen.

Roy was a supporter of our AWC-SB mission and sponsored many of our events. For the support he has given to AWC-SB throughout the years, our chapter will memorialize him with a scholarship. Anyone wishing to contribute in his honor may make a donation payable to AWC-Mankovitz Memorial Fund. Checks can be sent to: AWC-Mankovitz Memorial Fund, c/o Becky Christenson, 507 Calor Dr., Buellton, CA 93427.
