Women in communication roles often deal with controversial issues and challenging clients. In these situations we need to negotiate with confidence. American women are averse to the often-awkward but oh-so-important dance of negotiation in the workplace. Our panelists will discuss the reasons why women avoid negotiating. They will also share tips and techniques to help you feel confident when you need to assert yourself.

Speaker, trainer, and communication consultant Lisa Gates leads individuals and small to medium businesses through finding better ways to communicate, conflict resolution, and applying coaching techniques to advance professional goals. As co-founder of She Negotiates and a certified coach, Gates helps high-potential women design and negotiate powerful livelihoods that close their income and leadership gaps. Britt Andreatta, PhD, is the Director of Learning and Development for lynda.com where she designs and delivers a range of training options to enhance the professional development of all employees. Andreatta is a published author, certified coach, and seasoned professional with over 25 years experience teaching and training on a range of leadership topics including organizational development, transformational leadership, learning agility, emotional intelligence, building and leading effective teams, engaging and motivating others, cultural competence, and communication, to name a few. She specializes in further developing and honing the skills of managers, leaders and senior executives. Renee Grubb is the owner and co-founder of Village Properties, a leading residential real estate firm with offices in Montecito, Santa Barbara and Santa Ynez. Grubb is actively involved in the Santa Barbara community. She established the award winning β€œTeachers Fund” supported by her company to help local school teachers buy the supplies they desperately need. In addition Grubb serves on the Board of Trustees of Antioch University Santa Barbara and the Board of Directors of the Santa Barbara Chamber of Commerce where she was Chairperson in 2008. A past President of the Santa Barbara Association of Realtors in 1995, she now serves as a Director of California Association of Realtors. She is a member of the Montecito Education Foundation, Partners in Education, Chairperson twice for the American Heart Association, a long time committee member of the South Coast Business & Technology Awards Committee. In recognition she has received countless awards from nonprofit organizations. Grubb is a graduate of the Mediation Institute of Santa Barbara.

Lois Phillips, PhD, Author of Women Seen and Heard, is a consultant, coach, speechwriter, and conference speaker. She will teach a one-day Negotiation Skills for Women workshop on March 23 through UCSB Extension. Based on research from the Harvard Negotiation Project regarding women’s negotiation style, Phillips will present some theories about why β€œWomen Don’t Ask,” have difficulty closing the deal to their advantage and offer some suggestions for how to prepare for your next negotiation.

Dr. Lynn K. Jones is a Certified Personal and Executive Coach who works with individuals, groups and organizations to be the best they can be. As a business and life coach she has helped individuals understand their temperament, styles and strengths so they can negotiate with others to optimize their life and businesses.
